5. Savor Louisville Derby Week Activities on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail

You cannot visit our state without adding Louisville Derby week activities along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to your itinerary. Bourbon is America's native spirit, and 95% of the world's supply is crafted right here in Kentucky. Taking a distillery tour during festival season is an absolute must!

Many famous distilleries are located right in downtown Louisville or just a short drive away in the surrounding rolling hills. You can take guided tours to see exactly how this amber gold is made, from the bubbling fermentation tanks to the deeply charred oak barrels resting in massive, sweet-smelling rickhouses. Afterward, enjoy a guided tasting to learn how to pick out notes of caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak. It is a delicious, educational, and deeply cultural experience that pairs perfectly with the horse racing theme of the week.

6. Experience Steamboat Louisville Derby Week Activities on the Belle of Louisville

On the Wednesday before the Derby, you can head down to the riverfront to watch the Belle compete against other riverboats in a friendly but fiercely competitive race up and down the Ohio River. The boats blast their steam whistles, the calliopes play cheerful tunes, and the crowds cheer loudly from the banks. If you want an even closer look, you can purchase tickets to actually ride on the Belle or her competitors during the race! It is a joyful, quirky tradition that perfectly highlights the unique river town heritage of our amazing city.

As the oldest operating Mississippi River-style steamboat in the world, the Belle is a floating piece of American history. During the festival, she takes center stage in the legendary Great Steamboat Race!

7. Celebrate Louisville Derby Week Activities at the Kentucky Oaks

Finally, cap off your preliminary Louisville Derby week activities by attending the fantastic Kentucky Oaks. Held at Churchill Downs on the Friday before the big race, the Oaks is specifically dedicated to three-year-old fillies (female horses). It is widely considered the locals' favorite day at the track!

The entire day is themed around the color pink to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Track visitors dress head-to-toe in stunning pink outfits, suits, and fabulous hats. Instead of the Mint Julep, the official drink of the day is the Oaks Lily, a refreshing and beautifully pink cocktail made with vodka and cranberry juice. When the winning filly is draped in a gorgeous garland of "Lilies for the Fillies," the crowd goes wild! It is an elegant, thrilling, and incredibly meaningful day of racing that you will absolutely treasure.
