The Sweet Beginnings in 1919

The story of the Kentucky Bourbon Ball actually starts long before anyone thought to mix whiskey with chocolate. It begins in 1919 with two fiercely independent women: Ruth Hanly (later Booe) and Rebecca Gooch.
Both women worked as substitute teachers in Frankfort, Kentucky. However, they shared a massive passion for making homemade sweets. Their chocolates and candies were so popular among family and friends that they decided to turn their hobby into a genuine business.
Starting a business as a woman in 1919 was no easy task. Family members and local businessmen advised against it. Despite the skepticism, Ruth and Rebecca pooled their resources. They bought a marble slab, a copper kettle, and a few basic ingredients to open the Rebecca Ruth Candy Company.
Their dedication paid off immediately. People traveled from all over the region to buy their handmade mints, caramels, and chocolates. They insisted on using only the absolute best ingredients, establishing a reputation for unparalleled quality.

Surviving Hardships and Heartbreak

Running a business comes with massive challenges, and the Rebecca Ruth Candy Company faced its fair share. In 1929, Rebecca Gooch decided to get married and sell her half of the business to Ruth.

Ruth took the reins just as the Great Depression hit the country. Selling luxury chocolates during an economic collapse forced her to be incredibly resourceful. She worked tirelessly, navigating ingredient shortages and tight budgets to keep the candy company afloat.

Tragedy struck again a few years later when Ruth lost her husband and her factory burned to the ground. A lesser person might have walked away. Instead, Ruth rebuilt her life and her business from scratch. She proved that true Kentucky resilience can overcome any obstacle.

1936: The Birth of the Legendary Kentucky Bourbon Ball

Every great invention needs a spark of inspiration. For the Bourbon Ball, that spark arrived during Frankfort’s bicentennial celebration in 1936.

Ruth attended a festive gathering where local dignitaries celebrated the town's rich history. During the party, a dignitary named Eleanor Hume Offutt made a brilliant observation. She noted that the two best tasting things in the world were a sip of fine Kentucky bourbon and a bite of Ruth Booe’s famous mints.

That simple comment sparked an incredible idea in Ruth’s mind. What if she could combine the two?

Ruth hurried back to her candy kitchen and began experimenting. Mixing liquid bourbon with candy fondant without ruining the texture proved to be a massive scientific challenge. After countless batches and extensive flavor testing, she finally perfected the recipe.

She blended premium aged Kentucky bourbon with a creamy, buttery fondant center. She rolled the center into a perfect sphere, dipped it in rich dark chocolate, and crowned it with a fresh Southern pecan. The world’s very first Bourbon Ball was officially born!

A Legacy of Kentucky Craftsmanship

The new confection became an instant sensation. Customers could not get enough of the Kentucky Bourbon Ball and it's smooth, sweet chocolate giving way to the warm, spirited kick of bourbon.

Ruth’s invention completely revolutionized the candy industry. For decades, the Booe family guarded the secret recipe, passing it down through generations. Today, the Rebecca Ruth Candy factory in Frankfort still operates using many of the same traditional methods Ruth perfected nearly a century ago.

They still use original copper kettles to cook the candy centers. They still sort pecans by hand to ensure only the best nuts make it onto the chocolates. This unwavering commitment to craftsmanship keeps the legacy of Ruth Booe alive in every single bite.
