Fireworks over the city during Thunder over Louisville

Thunder Over Louisville has grown into a monumental event that brings our entire community together. It is not just a fireworks display; it is a patriotic celebration, a world-class air show, and the ultimate precursor to the first Saturday in May. Whether you are a lifelong local or traveling to see the spectacle for the first time, this event promises to leave you breathless.

Let’s dive into how this incredible tradition began, what you can expect from the 2026 air show, and how you can get totally ready for Derby 152!

How Thunder Over Louisville Began

It is hard to believe that the nation’s largest annual fireworks event started as a simple daytime stage show! Back in the summer of 1988, the Kentucky Derby Festival Board and Staff gathered at a state park in Western Kentucky for a planning workshop. They wanted to create a fresh, exciting opening ceremony for the festival.

Festival organizers and local television executives brainstormed ways to break new ground. Their vision came to life at the Chow Wagon on the river. The very first opening ceremony featured a live stage show to introduce the festival's theme song, a massive release of about 20,000 multi-colored balloons, and daytime fireworks shells. Broadcasted live, the event drew an impressive crowd of around 10,000 people.

As the daytime fireworks echoed over the river, a simple question changed everything: Could this be done at night? The answer was an enthusiastic yes. From that moment, the nighttime spectacular we now know as Thunder Over Louisville was born. Today, thanks to generous community sponsors, it stands as the pinnacle of pyrotechnics and ranks among the top five air shows in the country.

Before the sky goes dark for the fireworks, the afternoon belongs to the pilots. The Thunder Over Louisville air show is a proud, patriotic display of aviation excellence, featuring both military and civilian aircraft.
This year, the lineup is absolutely spectacular. You will feel the power of the U.S. Air Force Viper Demo right in your chest as it tears through the sky. Aviation fans will also be thrilled by flybys from multiple fighter jets, including the F-15, the F-16, and the F/A-18s from the United States Marine Corps.
                                                                                       Frontline Fighters and Special Tactics
We are incredibly excited to welcome America’s newest frontline fighter, the F-35C, to the Louisville skies. The unique and versatile V-22 Osprey is also making a highly anticipated return for the 2026 show.
For an extra dose of local pride, keep your eyes peeled for a special tactics demonstration.                                                                                                  This thrilling showcase features seamless integration with the 63rd Theater Aviation Brigade of the Kentucky Army National Guard and the 123rd Special Tactics Squadron of the Kentucky Air National Guard. It is a powerful reminder of the skill and dedication of our armed forces.
