The story of the Modjeska begins in 1883. The city of Louisville was buzzing with excitement because Madame Helena Modjeska, a world-renowned Polish actress, had arrived in town to star in the debut of Ibsen’s A Doll's House. She was a true global superstar of her time, known for her captivating performances and elegant charm.
During her stay, a local candy maker named Anton Busath was absolutely mesmerized by her performance. He wanted to create a confection that matched her sweetness and grace. After experimenting in his shop, he perfected a heavenly combination of homemade marshmallow dipped in creamy caramel. He presented the candy to Madame Modjeska and asked for her permission to name it after her. She graciously agreed, and the "Modjeska" was born!
To this day, the candy remains a proud Louisville tradition, celebrating both the history of the theater and the artistry of local candy makers.

The Anatomy of a Perfect Modjeska

What makes the Modjeska so irresistible? It all comes down to the wonderful contrast of textures and the high-quality ingredients used by our local artisans.

First, you have the center. Unlike the store-bought marshmallows you might toast over a campfire, a proper Modjeska features a dense, artisanal marshmallow. It is sweet, fluffy, and melts beautifully on your tongue.

Then comes the coating. Candy makers dip each marshmallow entirely by hand into a piping hot kettle of rich, buttery caramel. As the caramel cools, it forms a chewy, luxurious shell around the soft center. When you take a bite, the creamy caramel and the delicate marshmallow blend together to create a flavor profile that is beautifully balanced and completely addictive.

It is the kind of old-fashioned candy that brings a smile to your face and instantly transports you back to simpler times!

A Legacy of Sweetness: Muth's and Bauer's Candies

Anton Busath’s original candy shop unfortunately burned down in the 1940s, but the recipe and the legacy of the Modjeska did not disappear. Other historic Louisville candy makers stepped up to keep the tradition alive, and we are so lucky that they did!

Today, families across Kentucky and beyond enjoy Modjeskas crafted by legendary local businesses. Brands like Muth's Candies, a staple in Louisville's East Market District since 1921, and Bauer's Candies, which has been passing down its closely guarded family recipes for generations, continue to make these treats the old-fashioned way. They honor the original craftsmanship, ensuring that every batch is just as wonderful as the one Anton Busath created over a century ago.
