A Brief History of the Mint Julep

The julep's roots stretch back centuries, all the way to the ancient Sasanian Empire, where a fragrant concoction called "gulab" was used for medicinal purposes. By the time it arrived in the American South during the 18th century, it had evolved into a spirit-based drink served to the well-heeled as a morning refresher. The first known printed reference appeared in 1803, when British traveler John Davis described a drink he enjoyed at a Virginia plantation—"a dram of spirituous liquor that has mint steeped in it, taken by Virginians of a morning."
From Virginia, the julep made its way west to Kentucky, where local distillers put their stamp on it. The abundant limestone water, fertile cornfields, and oak forests of the Bluegrass State made it the perfect birthplace for bourbon—and the perfect home for the mint julep. When Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. founded the Kentucky Derby in 1875, the mint julep was already a fixture at gatherings across the state. Clark himself helped standardize the drink and establish it as a Derby tradition.
By 1938, Churchill Downs had made it official, beginning to serve the mint julep in souvenir glasses for 75 cents. Those early glasses quickly became collector's items, and the tradition of the commemorative julep cup continues to this day. More than 120,000 mint juleps are now served at Churchill Downs over Derby weekend each year.

What Makes a Great Mint Julep?

At its core, a mint julep is a beautifully simple drink: bourbon, fresh mint, simple syrup, and crushed ice. But like most classic cocktails, the details matter.

Bourbon: Since bourbon is the only spirit in the drink, quality counts. A slightly higher-proof bottle—somewhere in the mid-80s to 90 proof range—works best, as it holds up well against the dilution from crushed ice. Woodford Reserve has been the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby since 1999 and remains a go-to choice for a reason.

Mint: Fresh is non-negotiable. When it comes to the garnish, give your mint sprig a firm slap against the back of your hand before placing it in the glass—this releases the aromatic oils and makes the drink smell as good as it tastes.

Crushed ice: This has been the preferred ice for mint juleps since the 1930s, when it was chipped from large blocks stored in cold sheds. Crushed ice chills the drink faster and creates that signature frosted exterior on the cup.

The cup: Traditionally, a mint julep is served in a silver or pewter julep cup. Not only does it look stunning on a Derby Day table, but it also keeps the drink ice-cold and develops a beautiful frost on the outside as you hold it.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

1

In a julep cup or rocks glass, lightly muddle the mint leaves with the simple syrup. Be gentle—over-muddling can make the mint bitter.

2

Add the bourbon, then pack the glass tightly with crushed ice.

3

Stir until the outside of the cup is frosted.

4

Top with more crushed ice to form a small dome.

5

Firmly slap a fresh mint sprig on the back of your hand to release its oils, then use it to garnish the drink.

6

Add a few drops of bitters on top if desired, and serve with a straw.
